State of the Environment
Research Department
The Institute's research activities traditionally included biology, geology, geophysics and polar history. A recent restructuring turned the activities into multidisciplinary research programmes.

The research is mainly aimed at the Norwegian authorities´ need for environmental information concerning the polar areas. The Barents Region (mainly north-west Russia) is included in the geographical area covered by the Institute.

The Institute Research Programmes comprise Polar Climate - a topic given especially high priority - along with Ecotoxicology, Marine Ecology, Terrestrial Ecology and Geological Mapping. The NPI collaborates with research institutions all over the world, as well as being a contributor to national research programmes and programmes of the Polar Environmental Centre in Tromsø.

The Institute is responsible for the Norwegian research stations in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, the Troll and Tor field stations in Antarctica and the research vessel Lance. It also provides logistics support to the international research community in Svalbard.

NPI scientists have always carried out extensive fieldwork, and much time is spent in Svalbard in the spring and summer, when the archipelago is more easily accessible. Every three years the Institute is responsible for organising the Nordic Antarctic Research Expeditions (NARE)
