This programme includes:
- stock structure of ringed seals in the North East Atlantic (genetics) with an emphasis on local sub-structure within Svalbard
- spring and early summer haul-out behaviour in relation to meteorological conditions and point in the season as well as spatial dynamics in relation to ice features
- prey availability and space use during the spring season
determination of density and abundance of ringed seals in selected fjords in Svalbard, as a basis for further monitoring and current management - comparative study of population parameters determined in 1981-82 and the present to investigate potential changes in vital rates or the age and sex structure of the population
- diet on a local and seasonal basis
- an evaluation of condition and " health" status (blubber-reserves and haptoglobin concentrations) of the population
- assessment of contaminant exposure and condition effects on steroid homeostasis.
Most project elements have been completed, though some analyses continue. If ice conditions are suitable the final field work within this project related to density and abundance (social factors) will be completed in 2008.
All positions now filled within this programme.
